Nigeria’s trucking industry is witnessing a significant shift, thanks to ongoing infrastructure improvements led by the government. With over 90% of the country’s goods transported by road, trucking is the backbone of logistics—and recent developments are directly improving efficiency, cost and delivery timelines.
One of the most critical areas of progress is road rehabilitation. Major trucking corridors like the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Abuja-Kano Road, and Port Harcourt-Enugu Road are undergoing reconstruction and expansion. These upgrades are reducing travel time, improving safety, and minimizing vehicle wear and tear—key factors in lowering logistics costs for trucking companies.
To ease traffic around port areas, especially in Lagos, the government introduced electronic call-up system (Eto). This digital scheduling tool has helped reduce the chaos and congestion that once caused long delays for trucks trying to access the ports. As a result, the turnaround time for truckers has improved and fuel waste from idle time has dropped.
Public-private partnerships (PPPs) are also playing a major role in improving trucking routes. Some road networks that serve industrial hubs and export zones are now being funded and maintained by private entities in collaboration with the government. This ensures higher-quality roads and more consistent maintenance, both of which benefit heavy-duty trucks.
Additionally, the development of bypasses, truck parks and rest stops are slowly picking up. These additions not only enhance driver welfare but also improve traffic flow by providing designated areas for long-haul trucks to park and rest, instead of crowding urban roads.
Despite ongoing challenges like road maintenance backlogs and enforcement issues, the outlook for Nigeria’s trucking logistics sector is improving.
